L'histoire
L’escroc Harold Hill arrive dans une petite ville de l'Iowa, où il s'attend à tromper ses habitants avec son plan élaboré pour gagner de l'argent : Malgré son manque total de connaissances musicales, il convaincra tout le monde qu'il est un brillant chef d'orchestre et recrutera tous les garçons de la ville pour former un groupe, empochant l'argent pour acheter des instruments et des uniformes. Le problème ? Certains membres de la ville, en particulier la bibliothécaire sévère Marian Paroo, ne croient pas vraiment à l'histoire d'Harold. Alors qu'Harold lutte pour maintenir son projet à flot, il se retrouve de plus en plus attaché aux habitants de la ville, qui ont tous connu un changement positif depuis son arrivée. Ce qui complique encore les choses, c'est qu'Harold tombe aussi amoureux de la belle Marianne.
