L'histoire
Trois marins quittent leur navire pour profiter des 24 heures de permission pour explorer la ville de New York. Chip veut voir les curiosités dont son père lui a parlé, Ozzie veut décrocher un rendez-vous avec une beauté de Manhattan, et Gabey veut retrouver Ivy. Après avoir accepté d'aider Gabey à trouver Ivy, ils se séparent pour couvrir plus de terrain...

Notes: De nombreux changements ont été apportés au scénario et à la partition par rapport à la version scénique originale. La plupart de la musique de Bernstein a été abandonnée au profit de nouvelles chansons de Roger Edens, qui n'aimait pas la majorité de la partition qu’il trouvait trop complexe et trop opératique. Cela a amené Bernstein à boycotter le film.
