From Here to Eternity se déroule sur l'île hawaïenne d'Oahu en 1941, avant et pendant l'attaque de Pearl Harbor. L'histoire, librement inspirée des expériences de guerre de Jones, suit plusieurs membres d'une compagnie militaire, dont le capitaine Dana "Dynamite" Holmes et le sergent-chef Milt Warden, qui entame une liaison avec la femme de Holmes, Karen.
