L'histoire

Le S.S. American navigue entre New York et l'Angleterre avec un groupe de passagers aux personnalités diverses et comiques : Reno Sweeney, chanteur de cabaret populaire et ancien évangéliste, son ami Billy Crocker, un courtier de Wall Street amoureux qui est venu à bord pour tenter de gagner la faveur de sa bien-aimée Hope Harcourt (qui est fiancée à un autre passager, Sir Evelyn Oakleigh), et un escroc nommé Moonface Martin. Chanson, danse et farces s'ensuivent alors que Reno et Moonface tentent d'aider Billy à gagner l'amour de sa vie.

Notes: un remake a vu le jour en 1956, toujours avec Bing Crosby dans le rôle de Bill et Zizi Jeanmaire. mais le livret a été considérablement révisé, des chansons ont été coupées et d’autres ajoutées. Tout comme la version télévisée de 1954, qui cette fois-ci mettait en scène Ethel Merman et Frank Sinatra avec une intrigue légèrement différente et ne gardant que 5 chansons du show, le reste étant d’autres chansons de Cole Porter.
