L'histoire
Qu'est-ce que la folie ? Pour la maire corrompue Cora Hoover Hooper et ses acolytes, c'est une menace pour le plan de collecte de fonds de la ville en faillite. Lorsque l'eau jaillit soudainement d'un rocher, Cora s'efforce de gagner de l'argent auprès des pèlerins qui cherchent désespérément à recevoir les eaux curatives. Mais lorsque l'infirmière Fay Apple, l'infirmière dévouée et sceptique de l'asile d'aliénés local, amène ses patients au soi-disant miracle, les plans de Cora sont menacés et elle se tourne vers le psychiatre J. Bowden Hapgood pour savoir qui est fou et qui est sain d'esprit. Mais il déclare au contraire que tout le monde est fou, et la ville profite de sa folie face au conformisme.
